Sophia works on the Composting for Community team at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) researching, analyzing, and building local and federal US policies that advance community composting. Her policy work focuses on advancing diverse and distributed approaches to composting to create jobs, enhance soils, protect the climate, and reduce waste. Sophia received her Bachelor of Arts in Environment and Development Studies from McGill University and also has an introductory certificate in Permaculture.

Presentation Title: Where Composting and Healthy Soils Policies Meet and Opportunities for Advancement
Presentation Description: In this session, ILSR will present an overview of policies that link soil health and composting based on research of policies implemented and proposed across the US. From micro-plastics and PFAS contamination, to on-farm compost use and nutrient management, there is significant overlap between policies on healthy soils and those on composting, warranting a need to better integrate the synergies between the two. The presentation will cover trends and opportunity pathways to better make those connections in order to pass effective policies that support soil health via composting and compost use.

Presentation Description: From micro-plastics and PFAS contamination, to on-farm compost use and nutrient management, there is significant overlap between healthy soils policy and composting policy, warranting a need to better integrate the synergies between the two issue areas. This session will convene stakeholders and interested parties to discuss and support development of policy advocacy efforts to highlight the synergies between composting policies and soil health policies, and to move legislation forward across the country.
