Steve Petrie started his fire service career as a fire fighter in the U.S. Army. Upon leaving the Army he begin work in Fire Prevention with Phoenix Fire Department, where he has been for the past 12 years. During this time he began working with the composting industry to conduct fire inspections. This work led to several policy and code changes within the City of Phoenix. Firefighting policies have begun to change with the understanding of how many of these sites work. Steve has worked with industry professionals from all over the United States to find solutions unique to the composting industry. Additionally, he was worked with Arizona State University on composting studies to determine best practices for composting facilities as they relate to fire department procedures.

Presentation Summary: This presentation will cover the codes mandated by the International Fire Code and how they apply to the user. Phoenix has adopted additional code requirements which will also be discussed and the rational behind these mandates. Finally, this workshop will give a historical perspective of regional fires and lessons learned from them. This Presentation will focus primarily on the commercial operation of compost and green waste production as it relates to fire department issues.
