Session Name: Municipal Composting 2: Addressing Wasted Food through Reduction and Composting

Session Time: Wednesday, January 29, 1:45 to 3:15 PM

Presentation Title: Providing Operational Guidance for Municipalities adding Food Scraps to a Yard Debris Composting Program

Presentation Summary: The growing landscape of food waste legislation and sustainability related goals at the community, state, and national level, has fostered significant interest from municipalities to incorporate food waste diversion into their existing composting services. Many rural communities operate leaf and yard waste composting sites (or partner with private operators), and have interest in growing these programs to accept food waste. The expansion of these programs is often difficult and has led to a lot of open-ended questions among municipalities. In 2019, The Center for EcoTechnology (CET) and BioCycle has developed an informative Compost Site Operator Guidance document to help municipalities navigate the complexities of expanding a community food waste composting program. The document clarifies the decision making progress regarding site options, suitability of on-site vs. offsite management, evaluating the total cost of operation, and understanding the various intricacies of establishing a new food composting program. BioCycle and CET will present on the usefulness of this document, as well as specific strategies for municipalities to effectively implement these programs.
